There are many things in our life that can take us away from the Lord. We have so many things that can stand in our way of what is most important. These things that stand in our way are distractions something we need to avoid. How do we do that? It is easier said than done, but with the right help we can be over-comers.
I know I have talked about The Pilgrim’s Progress before, and this won’t be the last time either. Anyway, in that book it talks about this city called Vanity Fair and this fair has all the attractions of the world, anything that you can imagine, there are sellers and buyers, and is set up like a carnival fair.
Imagine with me for a minute or two that you and I are in this fair together. We see some people selling jewelry, another selling unhealthy but tasty looking food, there are clothes, shoes, bags, movies, entertainment of all sorts and sizes. All for the taking, but of course like anything in this world it comes at a price. That price is a great one however, and before you know it, you have set up a house in this city and have been there for years.
You see when Christian and his companion were on the road to the Heavenly City they had to go through Vanity City to get to where they were going. The city was an analogy of what we Christians face every single day of our lives. Satan tempts us to change our looks through jewelry, tattoos, and clothes. That is only some of the things that he tries to tempt us with and for each person the temptation will be different, everyone struggles with something.
Distractions come in many ways, they come to each person differently. Distractions are whatever take away our attention from our relationship with God. Only you can fill in the blanks as to what that thing is. When you feel as if your relationship with God is not the same, or that you are changing in your character, you even stop having your morning worship then you need to stop whatever distraction is causing that.
Christian and his companion had to plug their ears to the voices of the people trying to distract them on their way to the Heavenly land. As a result they were ridiculed, laughed at, then put into prison and the people were cruel to them. These are also things that we can expect but this world is not our home we are just passing through.
Jesus says in:
1 John 2:15-17 (KJV)
15 Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him.
16 For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.
17 And the world passeth away, and the lust thereof: but he that doeth the will of God abideth for ever.
Colossians 3:2 – Set your affection on things above, not on things on the earth.
There are many more examples in the Bible, and I would encourage you to do a study of it on your own time and read all the verses for yourselves. Hard times may come upon us because we do things differently, but Jesus will help us and see us through. Jesus has called us to be apart from the world.
We need to ask three important questions regarding what we do. First we need to ask is this bringing me closer to God? Than we need to ask, is this making me think of the soon coming of Jesus and of the judgment that is about to happen? And finally, would I want to be found doing this if I knew Jesus was coming today?
When we ask these questions we will always know the answer to whether the thing which we want to do is acceptable to God. If we are sincere and honest with ourselves, and if you are still unsure, pray and study with an open heart and mind that the Lord will lead and guide you to do the right thing. We will know that activity, clothes we wear, things we listen to; or whatever it may be; is glorifying God or taking Him to the cross. We must also remember that God is watching us all the time and knows exactly what we are doing.
How can we stop these distractions? The first thing we must always do is to pray and confess our sin to God. We must tell Him how sorry we are and than we must ask Him for His help with our problem. Next we need to trust that He will help us.
Whenever we feel the temptation or urge to do something that is not right, immediately go to Him in prayer, and don’t stop praying until He has lifted the temptation away. For with every temptation, He has made a way of escape…”1 Corinthians 10:13 – There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.
We also need to find something else to take that time that we used to waste. All of our time on earth is precious and we should use all of it to draw us closer to God. We should spend more time with Jesus and in His Word.
Even time is a talent that God has given to us to use, and we will be held accountable for all the time that we have wasted on frivolous things. Now is the time to confess and start anew. Soon and I mean very soon time will run out and probation will close. Now it is high time to awake out of sleep.
Like I said before whatever we do we need to make sure it is making us draw closer to God. We should not let the distractions of the world to get in our way.
Satan would love nothing more than to see us lost, but God has better plans for us. A new home to take us to, and the reason why He has waited this long to come is because He is giving us each a chance to turn our lives over to Him so that we may be saved forever. He wants to give us a crown, and a mansion, He has His arms open wide waiting to receive us. After all Jesus loves us so much He came down here to die, that was a huge sacrifice, shouldn’t we be willing to do the same whether with our lives or the things in our lives?
If necessary the Lord has promised to send every angel in heaven down to help us. Isn’t that amazing? I don’t want to let distractions to get in the way of my relationship with God, do you?
